Terry Jones in conversation with Dylan Jones

In case you don't already know Terry Jones was the Art Director and Creator of i-D magazine with his wife Tricia Jones, its now been 36 years since i-D has launched and with the anniversary of Punk over this London Fashion Week, I couldn't think of a more perfect talk Then Terry Jones for one of the American Express talk series.

Hosted by former employee of Terry and now GQ Editor Dylan Jones made this a talk certainly one not to miss.

Left Terry Jones and right Dylan Jones
no relation but a lot of working history.

Everyone has to start somewhere and when you think of i-D you think of attitude, punk, street style and certainly not the images that conjure up that one may associate with the fashion magazine Vogue.
However Vogue was where Terry started his carrier in the 70's talking about working with Beatrice Miller otherwise known as Bea Miller who was the Editor of British Vogue from 1964-1985

When Dylan spoke of Miller he makes her sound very much like the original Devil wears Prada forget wintour she was the one that scared the industry people that a lot of people are scared of today.

And yet mention Wintour or Miller to Terry and he seems unfazed if anything maybe slightly amused by this reaction.

On response to Miller Terry admitted they had disagreements when working in Vogue especially one particular incident when "She Freaked out when I showed my Street Style Pics" - Terry Jones

Vogue certainly wasn't ready for some of Terry's ideas and as Dylan mentions Terry was probably one of the Originals to run a Street Style piece for any fashion magazine way before its popularity of the 00's Terry was certainly a innovator of his and our time.

When Terry Responds to Dylan about Wintour he says he remembers when she was a assistant and still see's her in that light not as the person she is today, which probably explains when you see any images of terry they usually at a fashion show talking to the fashion faces such as  Wintour and Westwoods like they best of friends.

With Jones getting fed up of the system of Vogue and not getting to run the stories the way he wanted to he started his own project and financed it himself running the project in the evenings and weekend's at first between his other job launching what we now know as i-D.

But in order before he launched i-D I should say he also launched a book  after leaving vogue then doing comercial work at the same time launched into i-D

Dylan talked of i-D becoming more of a Style magazine then a Fashion one which I certainly agree on as there is a energy of the magazine, each one being a sort of special photography book with the sketchbook layout.

This Sketchbook layout is not accidental Terry talks of to much of Dylan and other peoples frustration of working for him,
ripping up photo's and text and collaging them to make a overall feeling.
sometimes it didn't matter if he where to chop a head of the model or not complete all the text with this cut and paste approach in the early i-D days.

However overall this is what worked for him making him almost a friendly father figure to many in the industry especially the 80's generation you get the sense that Terry could be tough but a perfectionist to make his dream and vision of i-D work and to peoples frustrations or to there celebrations they where always respectful to him as they had a faith in his vision overall.

you may be forgiven for wondering why I speak of Terry in past tense for i-D this is because he is still known for the work and rightly so for i-D however he did sell the magazine to Vice around about 2012.

in audience Tricia Jones, Terry's wife shows support and even answered a question to someone else in the audience supporting Terry.

Below one of my favourite covers of i-D Scarlett Cannon on the Front Cover who I have worked with over a number of times.

overall the presentation of magazine cover to magazine cover from Vogue to i-D with the commentary of Dylan and Terry Talking throughout was certainly a exciting moment for myself over LFW,

Seeing how fashion innovators talk about how they started and what's there views on Instagram generation there is so much to cover I wish I recorded the talk

However the British Fashion Council have covered some highlights of the Talk as below:

Until next time
